In 2020, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid, 380,000 people were forced to flee their homes due to war and insecurity. Most of these internal migrants are residents of Kunduz and Helmand provinces.

According to KARPO Media and Publication Group, the United Nations Humanitarian Aid Coordination Office "Ocha" said in its recent report that last year, a total of 380,000 people were forced to leave their villages and regions due to war and violence. According to the report, the majority of these internal migrants are residents of insecure and war-torn provinces, including Kunduz in the north and Helmand in the south of Afghanistan.

According to United Nations sources, since January 2020, people have been forced to leave their homes and villages in 32 out of 34 provinces of Afghanistan due to wars, and almost two-thirds of these internally displaced persons are children.
In 2019, there were about 426 thousand internally displaced people in Afghanistan.

This UN agency has said that due to the lack of access to most of Afghanistan's provinces, it is not clear whether all the displaced people who fled their regions in 2019 have returned to their homes or are still displaced.

An official census has not been conducted in Afghanistan and the United Nations Humanitarian Aid Office has estimated that the population of this country reaches about 40 million. Most of the displaced people have been forced to flee their areas due to the escalation of conflicts between the Taliban rebels and the military forces of the Afghan government.

Despite the beginning of the second round of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban in September 2020, war and insecurity still continue in most provinces of this country. In addition to the Taliban, the ISIS terrorist group is also active, especially in the eastern regions of Afghanistan, and this group has also forced a large number of Afghan families to leave their homes and areas.
